Biography

Laurie Carretta Scupp was born in California and moved frequently before settling in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. She began studying ceramics and immediately realized a profound passion to create with clay. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and stores, as well as two solo public installations in New York City. She makes ceramic sculpture as well as functional work, using both the potter’s wheel and hand building techniques.

Fairy tales, folklore, and myths have significantly influenced my life and art. The framework they provide for creatively conveying emotions is what I strive to achieve with my work. In addition to patterns or imagery, I will often add a whimsical element to further the narrative of the piece. Each of my works stands as a simple, purposeful object that expresses part of a story, to be interpreted by the viewer’s imagination.
